Newly appointed CombatCoaching.com Staff - Manny da Silva
Newly appointed Staff - Manny da Silva Manny da Silva who heads our Southern Suburbs movement in Gauteng was recently promoted to Staff level by CombatCoaching.com President, Morne Swanepoel. Manny has been leading by example for several years now focussing on training his MMA athletes to a high level by competing and dominating various Cage fighting circuits throughout South Africa. We are excited having Manny part of our team and know he will continue leading by example with this new responsibility.
EFC Africa LightWeight Champion - Wentzel Nel CombatCoaching.com Team MMA Fighter, Wentzel 'the Animal' Nel was crowned LightWeight Champion of the Extreme Fighting Championship on 8th May 2010 by defeating Leon Gloss in the first round with a KO. The title bout was held at the Coca Cola Dome in front of 6000 spectators.

The MRC calls Morne in for help
The Medical Research Council (MRC) of South Africa required specialized training for one of their units which operate in one of KwaZulu Natal's most violent townships, Umlazi. On Friday the 12th Sept, Morne spent the whole day training (09h30 - 16h30) the members of this unit in various aspects of dealing with violent crime in this region. Morne covered topics such as Anti Hijacking tactics, surviving an edged weapon attack, tactical measures and decisions to make during a public shootout, close quarter combat dealing with grabs/holds and strangles to mention a few. Morne also spent allot of time analyzing video footage of actual violent crime, reports from rape victims and a interview with a high profile hijacker. The MRC units made huge progress during this full day of training. Here is what some of them had to say:

Businesses in SA want to make a difference!
More and more businesses are hosting CombatCoaching.com for corporate events. These events either focus on fun team building or the more in your face reality Self Defense workshops.
One such company is Magnet Group based in Umbilo, Durban. On Saturday the 6th Sept Morne and two of his staff members (Brendan and Chris) were greeted by a very enthusiastic and professional set up. The 5 hour workshop flew by with all the ladies working hard against resisting opponents dealing with various close quarter attacks and the basics of how to survive a brutal knife attack. Great enthusiasm and participation was the order of the day where it was obvious that Magnet Group and it's staff was pretty serious about making a difference in it's community by empowering it's people.
The workshop was amazing. The girls have been talking about it all day. We are all stiff and bruised but was a most informative and energetic afternoon. All agreed that they learnt many new things. Morne is the most amazing man. He is patient and entertaining and we really enjoyed his teaching. Many thanks.

I had such a great time and feel so much more positive about facing an attacker, you brought out some interesting points and made all of us assess our personal fitness too. I wish more ladies would do something more positive and learn to fight back and I do hope we can get Virgin Active to put on another class like the one on Saturday as we discussed a class on "the best way to ward off a rapist " would be very beneficial. Knife Fighting Survival Workshop 19th July 2008
Morne treated the ladies of Amanzimtoti to a Knife Fighting Survival workshop on the 19th July which was held at the Amanzimtoti Virgin Active. At 09h30am the studio was a buzz of excitement with more than 60 ladies from Amanzimtoti in attendance. Morne had all the ladies sit down for the first 40min where he exposed the ladies to a real knife attack caught on CCTV in a shop. The ladies were then exposed to some gruesome pictures of injuries sustained by victims during a knife encounter. It was imperative to do this as many civilians (especially ladies) do not understand the extend of danger they place themselves under during a violent attack. Morne went through all the victims' injuries in detail explaining the difference in effectiveness with stab wounds compared to slashing wounds and some offensive/defensive tactics behind it. To break the ice Morne then shared a funny but yet sadly true video clip how some Self Defense systems/styles teach Knife Fighting. From here the ladies were partnered up and the fun started. First working on some drills focusing on distancing, timing, reaction and focus. This had everyone huffing and puffing in no time to say the least. One of the partners were then given a soft training knife and Morne went through various defensive/offensive tactics and techniques that took the ladies seconds to learn and apply in an 'alive' environment. The ladies were then treated to something special where Morne chose two ladies to demonstrate how much progress was made in a short space of time. Morne used fake blood on both ladies and then the fight was on - FULL RESISTANCE - with the goal being able to deal with the attack/pressure and then to escape the situation. Awesome performance was displayed and you could see the smiles and the look of confidence on all the workshops participants faces!
